Bike Number Decals

Race number decals and sponsor kits help riders stay readable, tidy and legal on the bike. Catprints and Signs makes cut vinyl and printed decal sets for off-road and track bikes across Paarl, Wellington and the wider Boland.

Built for race bikes, training bikes and support machines

Bike number decals are made to carry your race number, class markings, rider name and sponsor logos on fairings, number plates, side panels and rear guards. They are common on motocross bikes, enduro bikes, track bikes and pit bikes where clear numbers matter for marshals, officials and quick rider identification. We cut and print these sets to suit the shape of the bike and the finish you want, whether that is a clean plain number plate or a full sponsor kit with bold colour blocks. The material choice matters more than people think, because a bike gets handled, washed and scraped far more often than a car.

For riders in Paarl, Wellington, Stellenbosch and beyond, the main thing is that the numbers stay readable in bright sun, dust and mud. That is why we use outdoor grade vinyl and proper overlamination on printed work where needed. If you run a local series, club event or training bike, we can match the set to the bike size and panel shape so it does not look loose or stretched. Small set, big difference on the day.

Sizes, finishes and layout choices that suit your bike

Most number decal sets are ordered to fit standard off-road panels, but we also work from measurements if your plastics are custom or already modified. Common options include front number plates, side number backgrounds, fork guards, rear side panels and swingarm marks. If you need sponsor panels, we can build those into the layout so the artwork stays balanced and nothing gets hidden by vents or edges.

Finish options usually come down to gloss, matt or a satin look, depending on the bike colour and how much glare you want to reduce. Printed number backgrounds are useful when you want a specific colour fade, pattern or sponsor mix, while cut vinyl works well for crisp numbers and single-colour logos. If the bike is for night events or indoor track use, reflective accents can be added in controlled spots, though it is best to keep the main number block simple and legible.

  • Typical number height: 80 mm to 120 mm for side plates, depending on class rules
  • Front plate number width: usually 140 mm to 220 mm, based on panel space
  • Vinyl thickness: approx. 70 to 100 micron before lamination
  • Laminated print: suited to repeated washing and fuel splash near the tank area

Where bike number decals work best

These decals suit competitive bikes, club bikes, courier bikes and promotional machines where a clear identity matters. Off-road riders often want tough graphics that can handle mud, water and pressure washing, while track riders usually want a cleaner finish with high contrast numbers. Sponsor kits are also useful for riders who need to show team names, event entries or sponsor panels on the side fairings.

In the Boland, heat, dust and coastal humidity can all affect how decals age. A bike stored in Paarl under a cover will age differently from one used every weekend in Franschhoek, Worcester or Malmesbury, so we recommend the right film and finish for the way the bike is used. If the machine sits outside, it is worth choosing a laminate that resists UV and frequent cleaning, because the edges stay neater for longer and the colours dont dull as quickly.

Installation on plastics, panels and wraps

Most bike number decals are fitted on clean plastic panels, painted fairings or wrapped sections. The surface must be dry, grease free and free of polish so the adhesive can bond properly. On freshly painted parts, allow full curing time before fitment. If the bike already has old graphics, those should be removed carefully so the new set does not sit over lifted edges or trapped dirt. We can fit the decals for you, or prepare them for self-fit if the rider wants to install at home.

For installation on larger sponsor kits, it helps to warm the panel slightly and apply pressure evenly from the centre outwards. No power or gas supply is needed for normal decal fitment, only a clean working area and a little time. On a complete bike wrap or large number kit, the process is usually quicker with two hands and proper alignment marks, especially around vents, bolts and curves. If the bike has heat shields or irregular plastics, let us know upfront so we can plan the cut lines.

  • Clean surface with mild soap and water, then wipe dry
  • Remove old wax, chain spray mist and tyre dressing before fitment
  • Let paint cure properly before applying adhesive graphics
  • Use gentle heat only if needed, not direct flame or high heat

Care, washing and when to replace a set

Once fitted, bike number decals need simple care rather than special treatment. Wash with mild soap and water, then dry with a soft cloth. Avoid strong solvents, aggressive degreasers and stiff brushes on the printed areas. If the bike is used in sand or mud, rinse it first so grit does not scratch the top layer during wiping. Pressure washing is fine at a sensible distance, but do not aim a nozzle straight at lifted edges or seams.

Over time, the usual wear points are tank sides, knee rub areas, fork guards and the leading edge of panels. If a decal starts to lift, fade or crack, it is often better to replace that section before it damages the rest of the set. We also do reprints and updates when a number changes, a sponsor changes or the class lettering needs revising. That saves money compared with replacing the whole kit, which is handy for riders watching their budget between entries and tyres.

What to send when you order a bike number set

To quote and make the right set, we need the bike model, year if known, the number size, number colour, rider name and any sponsor logos. A clear photo of the side plates and front plate helps, especially if the plastics are after-market or the bike has already been modified. If you have a class rule on number background colour or number plate colour, send that too so we can match it first time and not waste time on rework.

Please also tell us whether you want cut vinyl numbers only, printed backgrounds only, or a full sponsor kit. If the bike is used in Paarl, Wellington, Stellenbosch or further out in Worcester and Malmesbury, it helps to mention how hard the bike is worked, because that affects the material choice. We can supply artwork checks, lamination, board mounting for display boards, and sign installation where needed for team stands or race support setups. The more detail you give upfront the cleaner the final set will be.
