Sign Refurbishment

If your sign has faded, cracked, lifted or no longer matches your current branding, we refurbish it instead of replacing it straight away. Based in Paarl and serving the wider Boland, we handle sign refreshes for shops, workshops, farms, offices and vehicle fleets that need a clean, current look again.

What sign refurbishment covers

Sign refurbishment is the practical middle ground between leaving a tired sign as is and commissioning a brand new one. We assess the existing structure, remove worn vinyl, clean and prep the surface, then replace the parts that have failed. That can include new printed faces, fresh cut vinyl lettering, updated contact details, directional panels, window graphics or a full re skin of a light box. If the frame is still sound, this approach usually saves time and money.

We work on shop fronts, estate notices, factory signage, roadside boards, directional signs, office fascias and vehicle graphics that have been in the sun too long. In the Boland, signs take a beating from strong UV, wind, dust and winter rain. Near the coast the humidity can lift edges sooner, while inland dust builds up around joins and corners. A proper refresh keeps the sign readable and tidy without changing the whole setup.

  • Removal of old vinyl, decals and faded print
  • Surface cleaning, degreasing and minor prep work
  • Replacement of damaged lettering, logos and details
  • New printed faces for light boxes and panels
  • Optional lamination for better weather resistance
  • Refitment of panels, trims and fixings where needed

How we handle the refurbishing process

Every job starts with a look at the existing sign and how it is mounted. We check the board, frame, screws, clips, faces and any electrical parts if the sign is illuminated. If we spot corrosion, water ingress or warped material we flag it before work begins, because there is no point fitting fresh graphics onto a weak base. After that, we confirm the wording, colours and layout updates with you so the new version matches your current branding.

Once approved, we strip the old material carefully and prepare the surface for the new application. For painted steel, aluminium composite, acrylic, PVC board or polypropylene sheets, preparation matters just as much as the print itself. Our team then produces the replacement graphics, cuts and finishes them, and fits everything back in place. If the sign is large or mounted high, we schedule the installation with the right access gear and safety controls.

  • Site check and condition assessment
  • Artwork update and layout confirmation
  • Removal of failed vinyl or printed layers
  • Production of replacement faces and graphics
  • Installation, alignment and final clean-up

Materials and sign types we refurbish

We refurbish a wide range of sign formats used across Paarl, Wellington, Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Worcester, Malmesbury, Klapmuts and Simondium. That includes flat panel signs, light boxes, directional boards, vehicle panels, trailer signage, magnetic signs and window graphics. For outdoor work, we recommend laminated print or properly cut vinyl on surfaces exposed to direct sun, wind and frequent cleaning. For indoor signs, finish choices depend on the look you need and how often the sign will be changed.

Where the structure allows it, we can retain the frame and only replace the face. That is common on retail fascias and estate signs. If the existing board has bowed or delaminated, we can remount the new face onto a fresh substrate. We also refurbish fleet branding when contact details, service areas or licence markings need to be updated. For repeat clients, we keep artwork aligned to the original set so the whole site or fleet stays consistent.

  • Light boxes and illuminated shop signs
  • Flat boards, fascias and entrance signs
  • Window graphics and contra-vision panels
  • Vehicle branding, magnets and motorbike decals
  • Safety signs and directional signage

Turnaround times and planning

Turnaround depends on the size of the sign, the condition of the base and whether the graphics must be redesigned or reprinted from scratch. A simple vinyl update on a sound panel can be turned around quickly, while a large light box or high mounted sign may need site planning and weather windows. In winter we often work around rain and early darkness, and in summer we plan for heat that affects adhesive cure times.

For routine refurbishments, we aim to keep downtime short so your business stays visible. If the sign is part of a trading front, we can often stage the work in sections so the whole frontage is never fully out of service. Urgent wording changes, such as trading name updates or compliance wording, are handled as quickly as the artwork approval allows. On larger projects, a clear timeline is agreed before production starts.

  • Small vinyl update: often same week if artwork is ready
  • Medium fascia or panel refurb: normally a few working days
  • Large signs or light boxes: allow extra time for access and fitting
  • Weather and site access can affect final scheduling

Pricing that suits repair work and updates

Refurbishment pricing is usually more sensible than full replacement, but it still depends on the actual condition of the sign. We quote on the work that needs doing, not on guesswork. The main factors are size, material type, access height, amount of stripping required, new print area, whether lamination is needed and if electrical components must be checked or replaced. If the frame is reusable, that keeps the cost down.

For clients with more than one site, or fleets that need regular updates, we can quote per sign or per batch. That makes it easier to plan annual refreshes and keep branding consistent across branches. We are also upfront when a refurb is no longer the economical option. If the base is rusted through, the face has failed badly or the mounting is unsafe, we will say so before any work goes ahead.

  • Quotes based on condition, size and materials
  • Separate pricing for stripping, printing and installation
  • Batch pricing available for multiple signs
  • We recommend repair only when it makes financial sense

Keeping refurbished signs in good condition

Once a sign has been refreshed, a little maintenance goes a long way. In the Boland, we usually suggest a visual check every 6 to 12 months, with closer intervals near busy roads, coastal air or exposed sites. Look for lifting edges, faded panels, water marks inside light boxes, cracked corners and loose fixings. Catching those issues early keeps a small repair from turning into a full rebuild.

If your business changes details often, such as phone numbers, operating hours, routes or service areas, it is worth planning for reprints and updates before the sign gets too far gone. We can help with replacement faces, new decals and small correction panels so the whole site stays current. That is especially useful for trade businesses, drivers, riders and shops that need to keep contact details easy to read from the road.

  • Check for fading, lifting and cracked edges every 6 to 12 months
  • Wash with mild soap and soft cloths, no harsh solvents
  • Avoid pressure washing close to vinyl edges and seams
  • Repair small faults early to prevent full replacement later

Questions we get asked

Can you refurbish a sign without replacing the whole structure?

Yes. If the frame and base are still sound, we can replace the worn graphics, face panels or lettering and keep the existing structure in place.

Do you handle both shop signs and vehicle branding updates?

Yes. We refurbish shopfront signs, light boxes, directional boards, magnets, wraps and other branded surfaces that need fresh artwork or new contact details.

How do you price a sign refurbishment?

We price according to size, condition, materials, access requirements and the amount of stripping, printing and fitting involved. If a full replacement makes more sense, we will say so.
