Franschhoek Window Graphics

For this Franschhoek retail unit, we supplied printed window branding and contra-vision for a street-facing frontage that needed to look tidy from inside and out. The job had to hold colour in strong sun, keep sightlines usable for staff, and deal with a busy tourist strip where clean presentation matters.

Street-Facing Shopfront With Tight Sightlines

The client was a retail business in central Franschhoek, working from a glass frontage that gets direct pedestrian traffic and plenty of passing vehicles. The brief was straightforward on paper: make the windows do more work for the brand, but keep the inside practical for daily trading. That meant visible graphics on the street side, clear enough view out for staff, and a finish that would not curl or fade quickly in the Boland sun.

Because the unit sits close to the pavement, privacy was also part of the job. People inside needed daylight and a usable line of sight, but not a fishbowl effect. We planned the layout around the main window sections, door positions, and the height of the eye line, then checked the final panel sizes against the actual glass measurements on site.

Brief, Constraints And What The Site Needed

The request came in as a window branding update, with contra-vision added where privacy and outward visibility both mattered. Franschhoek can be hard on printed film because of intense light, reflected heat off paving, and seasonal dust. We also had to work around trading hours so the shop would not lose customer access for long. The unit could not be fully blocked off for days, so the install had to be planned in one clean visit after print and prep.

We also allowed for the way municipal and landlord rules often affect shopfronts in town centres. Graphics had to stay within the glass areas, with no loose edges that could interfere with opening panels or create a maintenance issue later. The client wanted something smart but not loud, and that guided the colour balance and coverage ratio.

  • Street-facing retail frontage with multiple glass panels
  • Need for privacy without losing natural light
  • Visible branding from the pavement and road
  • Finish suitable for strong UV and daily cleaning
  • Installation timed to limit disruption to trade

Printed Window Graphics And Contra-Vision Supplied

We produced the artwork as window graphics with matching contra-vision sections for the main glazed areas. The printed material was prepared for outdoor exposure and cut to the exact panel sizes after artwork checks. Where the layout needed branding on solid coverage areas, we used full colour print. Where visibility from inside was important, the perforated film allowed the client to see out while still carrying the printed message on the outside.

To help the job last, we finished the print with protective lamination on the solid sections and kept the edges clean for fitting. The overall spec was sized to suit the glass in the unit, with practical overlap allowances so the install sat neatly against seals and frame lines. No awkward joins, no crowded copy, just enough room for the message to breathe.

  • Outdoor-grade printed vinyl for solid window branding
  • Contra-vision film for outward visibility and privacy
  • Protective lamination on printed sections
  • Panel cutting to suit the exact glass measurements
  • Artwork checks before print to avoid layout issues

Fitment On Site In One Planned Visit

The install was completed over a short, planned timeline of about two weeks from approval to fitment, including artwork checking, print, finishing and booking the site slot. On the day, the glass was cleaned properly, aligned from the top edges down, and fitted section by section so the finish remained straight across the frontage. A good window job is often about patience more than speed, and that applies doubly when the frame spacing is uneven or the panes are not identical in size.

We worked around the door swing and handled the lower panels carefully so the graphics did not lift at the corners. The contra-vision sections were installed with the correct orientation so the printed face would read correctly from outside. In a shopfront like this, a small alignment error stands out immediately, so we checked each panel before trimming and final pressing. The result was neat and practical, with no bubbles left behind.

What Changed After The Graphics Went Up

The finished frontage gave the retail unit a clearer identity from the street and made the glass feel intentional instead of bare. From outside, the branding now reads well at walking pace and from moving traffic. From inside, the team keeps usable visibility and daylight, which is important during long trading days and in the hotter months when the windows do most of the work with heat control too.

The client also gained a cleaner daily experience. Staff no longer need to rely on makeshift coverings or partial blinds, and the frontage is easier to keep looking presentable. For a busy town like Franschhoek, where foot traffic comes and goes in waves, that kind of finish helps a business look ready every day, not just when someone has time to tidy it.

  • Better street presence for passing foot traffic and motorists
  • Improved privacy without blocking the inside out view
  • Cleaner shopfront presentation for daily trade
  • More durable finish than temporary coverings
  • Easy to wipe down during routine cleaning

What We Would Repeat On The Next Shopfront

If we were doing a similar Franschhoek shopfront again, we would keep the same approach: precise measuring, artwork checked against the glass, and a clear plan for which areas should be printed solid and which should stay see-through. That balance matters more than people think. Too much coverage and the inside feels closed in. Too little and the privacy benefit drops away. The right mix makes the graphics useful, not just decorative.

We would also stick with a short production window and a single installation visit where possible. It keeps the project tidy for the client and reduces the chance of delays from weather or trading interruptions. In the Boland, sun and wind can change quickly, so a well planned fit is worth more than rushing. When a window job is done properly, it should sit straight, hold its colour, and keep doing its work without fuss.

Questions we get asked

Can contra-vision still give privacy during the day?

Yes. During daytime, contra-vision reduces visibility into the shop while still allowing staff to see out. For best results, the inside lighting should be controlled after dark because bright interior light can reduce the privacy effect.

How long does a window graphics project like this take?

For a simple retail frontage, allow roughly two weeks from artwork approval to fitting. That gives time for artwork checks, printing, finishing and a planned site visit, which helps avoid mistakes.

Will the graphics handle strong sun and coastal humidity?

Yes, provided the correct outdoor film and finish are used. We specify materials suited to local conditions, including strong UV, dust and damp air, so the print holds up better in everyday use.
